And while Saturdays=Youth is undoubtedly a record fired by a sincerely-felt sense of nostalgia, it’s perhaps worth remembering that these weren’t even the films of Gonzales’ youth (he’d have scarcely been out of nappies by the time of Hughes’ 1984 breakthrough 16 Candles). So, instead of bombs, M83's Saturdays = Youth drops irresistible layers of swooning synth, spangled guitars, and echoed vocals on its listeners. Ah, the irony. I came into Saturdays = Youth expecting a progression in M83’s sound, and as I did get that at times, this record feels convoluted.
